【赤鬼のつぶやき　C.W.ニコル】モミジ (メープル)

我々の森を管理していた松木さんとわたしがアファンの森の手入れを始めた頃、森にはモミジをはじめ数種のカエデ科の木が自生していました。アファンの森からモミジの苗木をとって他の区画にも移植しましたが、よくシラカバと一緒に植えたのは、モミジの赤とシラカバの白という色の対比で景色の美しさがいっそう際立つと考えたからです。

モミジは小さな木で、高さは6～10メートルほど、多くは複数の幹を伸ばします。日本、韓国、中国、モンゴル、ロシア南東部にかけての地域に原産しますが、やはり日本庭園との縁が深いようです。世界でも、日本人のいるところ、日本文化のあるところに広く分布しています。

品種が多く、それぞれに名前も、色や葉の形も異なっています。モミジの葉は、カエデ科の他の木に比べて小さく、葉裂は5つ、7つ、9つのものがあります。育てやすい木ですが、水はけの悪いぬかるんだ土壌を嫌います。また、剪定に対する反応がいい一方、肥料のやり過ぎは逆効果です。害虫や病気とは無縁と言ってもいいでしょう。

アファンのモミジは秋になると艶やかな紅葉を見せてくれるので、毎年、この季節を心待ちにしています。

スウェーデンの医学者で植物学者でもあったカール・ツンベルグは18世紀末、長崎の出島から禁輸であったモミジの絵を密かにヨーロッパへ送り、学名をつけました（当時は、植物の絵の輸出入は禁じられていました）。
サクラのあとは秋の紅葉、日本でモミジと言えば人々の目を楽しませてくれる木の代表格ですが、家具などの材料として使われるという話をこれまで一度も耳にしたことがありません。あまり大きくならないからでしょうか。同じカエデ科の仲間たちは、メープルシロップをとったり、木材として様々な形で使われたりしているのですが。
とはいえ、モミジは家や他の成長途中の植物を日差しや風雨から守ってくれますし、その種子は小鳥たちの餌にもなっています。なにより、ただ眺めているだけで目の保養になり、子どもたちも真っ赤なモミジの葉を集めるのが大好きですから、それだけで十分ではないでしょうか。

MOMIJI – JAPANESE PALMATE MAPLE

When forester Mr. Matsuki and I began to tend our Afan woods we already had several species of maple (kaede) including the momiji. We took small saplings from our own woods and replanted them in other areas, often along with silver birch, for ascetic effect. The momiji is a small tree, six to ten metres in height, and often with multiple trunks. It is native to Japan, Korea, China, Mongolia and southeast Russia. However, momiji is most often associated with Japanese gardens. This tree has spread all over the world where there is a Japanese presence or Japanese culture. There are many cultivars, with different names, colours, and shapes of leaves. The leaves are smaller than other maples, with five, seven or nine pointed lobes. They are easy to grow, but dislike boggy soil. This tree responds well to pruning, and does not appreciate too much fertilizer. It has few problems with insects or disease.
Our Afan momiji trees have a gorgeous red colour in autumn, something to look forward to every year.
The Swedish doctor-botanist Thunberg secreted out drawings of momiji in the late 18th. century, and gave the tree its scientific name.
Although the momiji is perhaps the most popular ornamental tree after the cherry in Japan, I have never heard the wood being used for furniture or such, perhaps because of its relatively small size? Other maples are used to produce syrup, and their wood used in all manner of ways.
The tree provides shelter for houses and other growing plants and its seeds are eaten by some birds. Otherwise it’s just good to look at and children love to gather the autumn leaves.
